Weapon Classification

Postby Dan Ritchie » Thu Mar 22, 2012 10:06 pm

Before posting a question read the Otafest Convention Policies section on weapons. Found here.

As some have been confused, to clarify: METAL WEAPONS, BOKKEN & SHINAI (Kendo sticks), & OTHER DANGEROUS WEAPONS ARE STILL BANNED.

If it launches any sort of projectile, no matter how "safe" the projectile is, it is BANNED.

Include a picture in your inquiry.

Why that's a wonderful photo you didn't load. but don't worry I'll use the POWER OF IMAGINATION to figure out just which one of the many Warhammer 40K characters you are planning to do....

Yup nope, until you get me a picture to show me just what it is you are intending to use I'm going to say no.

(one does not simply assume I play over priced miniature games)

MERRY CHRISTMAS :D

Yes the prop Bolter will likely be fine. again as with all prop fire arms, I hold the right to refuse on sight at the con and make sure it has an Orange safety tip on it. The tip is not policy it is Law. (we don't want our patrons to be arrested.

How's about these two?
1)
Image
Shana's dragoon form bow from Legend of Dragoon

2)
Image
Raiden's sword from Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (Not sure what I'm going to make it out of yet, though I assume that will matter; what can I use? Provided it's allowed, anyway)

I will require visuals. IE Pictures.

but going without them I will make these comments.

1. the Bow, must be non functioning, either by having no string, or no arrows. your choice.

2. Raiden's Sword, Can NOT have a Metal blade. it can have metal details, but the business end must be made of another material.

3. ... there is no point 3 at this point.

Hello,
I've never had a costume with a weapon before so I thought I would ask - is this one ok? It's a store bought official piece of plastic. A kid's replica of Finn's sword from Adventure Time.

I notice Death the Kids guns are not allowed. But are his cannons? And Makas scythe (made of foam board and a wooden dowel).

scythe is in the list, I have no idea what Death the Kid's cannons look like. so until a picture is provided I will have to say no.

Kamen Rider Kabuto's Gun.
Image
I would probably keep it holstered by my side say for pictures and Chess Battles. The Gun's barrel comes off to become a knife like blade (Colored gold so by no means looks real) and the gun can be held by the barrel to make an "Axe" form. The Gun can only make lights and sounds and is child sized (I have to hold it with only 2-3 fingers on the grip and one on the trigger).

I think someone would sooner mistake that as an adult entertainment product than a weapon.

It's fine Ryuga. in fact, i'm going to go out on a limb and say that pretty much any kamen rider weapon is going to be fine. at least from what i've seen thus far. (as for things the enemies carry I have no idea)

Hello,
Are foam swords from the dollar store allowed? The actual blade part of the sword is foam and very flexable, while the handle (part you hold) has hollow plastic (at least I'm assuming its hollow) in the foam.
My group and I are looking into possibly cosplaying Four Swords Link for Otafest, and we just bought some swords from the dollar store since there's really nothing where we live to make prop swords out of.

See at the top,
those big notes?

now look at the ones with the biggest text.

Read them.

Can't read? get someone else to read it for you (also how the heck are you typing this out if you can't read?)

Read it yet?

Good.

Now you have a basic understanding of my disdain for you at this moment.

You had one thing to do, READ.

do I need to put it in lights?

attach Blinkers?

Have a woman in a bikini wander around holding it on a card?

SPELL IT OUT IN THE SKY WITH BLOODY FIREWORKS?

The answer is no. It has always been no. (well ok not always, but for a good 6/7 years now) and it will ALWAYS stay no.

If it is Metal It is not allowed

If it is a BOKEN it is NOT ALLOWED

If it is a Shinai (Kendo stick) IT IS NOT ALLOWED

IF IT IS A GUN OR LAUNCHES A PROJECTILE OF ANY SORT, IT IS NOT BLOODY WELL ALLOWED.

Obviously I have not made this clear, so help me out VisualSeraphim. What can I do to get it through to you that NO. a Boken is not allowed?

still need a picture, but if it is just attached to your costume it should be ok. start cracking it though and there is a high possibility that you will be removed from the convention.

Would Alan Humphries' (From Kuro***suji Musical 2; The Most Beautiful DEATH in the World) scythe be alright? It's just made from a thin wooden pole, cardboard and duct tape.
